Have you ever heard of “Tatedo”? It refers to the traditional art of choreographed sword fighting, often seen in Japanese movies and stage performances. But Tatedo is much more than flashy sword moves—it’s an art of timing, breath, and expression.
In this article, we’ll introduce the Japan Tatedo Association, a group dedicated to passing on the deeper values of this beautiful art form.
What is Tate?
Tatedo is the Japanese art of choreographed sword fighting. Rather than simply attacking and defending, Tatedo focuses on the harmony between partners, expressive movements, and precise timing.
Both the person who strikes and the person who is “cut” must move in sync, with full concentration and mutual trust.
During our lessons, you’ll learn the basics—how to handle a sword, how to move, how to strike and react. Even in just one hour, you can record a dramatic scene worthy of a samurai film.
Costumes are also provided! You can become a samurai in hakama, a flowing kimono, or even a ninja in full gear. It’s a complete transformation—inside and out.
About the Japan Tatedo Association
The Japan Tatedo Association doesn’t simply teach action scenes. We share Tatedo as a “way” (道)—a path to discipline, awareness, and expression.
Every day, we welcome visitors from around the world to experience Tatedo. Over 4,000 people a year participate in our programs, discovering a new side of Japanese culture through the sword.
We also run weekly training programs called Mononofu Juku, where locals of all ages come together for health, hobby, or self-growth. From kids to seniors, samurai fans and curious beginners—all are welcome.
In addition, we perform at hotels, business events, and international parties.
Imagine a surprise moment: “Samurai and ninja suddenly appear!” We create fun and unforgettable cultural moments that bring Japan to life.
Who Can Join?
The vast majority of participants have never held a sword before—and that’s totally okay!
We welcome everyone, from age 5 and up. We’ve even had four generations of one family enjoy Tatedo together. No matter your age or experience, it’s something everyone can enjoy.
Surprisingly, over 90% of our participants are from outside Japan. Some are fans of samurai movies, others grew up watching Japanese TV dramas, and many are anime or gaming fans. From all backgrounds and nationalities, they come together to enjoy the way of the sword.
Discover the Samurai Within
Holding a sword isn’t just about movement— It’s an invitation to look inward.
When you center the blade in front of your body and breathe deeply, you may feel a kind of focus you’ve never experienced before. It’s a quiet sharpening of the senses— a door to something inside you that’s been waiting to awaken.
If that calls to you, we invite you to step into the dojo. Come discover the samurai within.
